There are many things that I love in this world, but nothing compares to the magic of the holiday season! Being back at home has afforded me the opportunity to extend the magic a little bit. Typically, I’d have to pick the best day to fly in and see my family, which meant making sure I take advantage of every second before I have to leave. This year, I’m relaxing while taking it all in! No more worrying about coming in and out of town, left over work that maybe didn’t get done before travels, etc.
Think about all of the simple rituals and traditions that create core memories. Did you think about them? Okay, do you feel fuzzy inside? I can’t help but smile and be grateful for these moments. We live in a society where busyness is not only glorified, but almost necessary for survival. Hectic schedules are almost inevitable if you want to have the means to provide for yourself and your family. While so many holiday advertisements are focused on spending and overconsumption, which then encourages you to work more so you can afford it, I want to shift your attention to simple and free pleasures.
This season, focus on your mental well-being and fill your heart (and mind) with the simple but grand activities. Have a holiday decorating party with your family where you all dress in matching pjs (or whatever you already own), make hot cocoa, and get to decorating! Make every weekend a time for holiday movies, with your favorite treats and your favorite people! Drive around to look at the lights and just reminisce on when you were younger and what this season meant to you.
Let’s express gratitude for what truly matters: life, love, and community!
